At the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when the 14th regent Hojo Takatoki was defeated in an attack on Kamakura by Nitta Yoshisada, his retainers fled with the head of Takatoki, who had committed suicide at the age of 29 in the Battle of Tosyoji, to avoid giving it to the enemy. When they were wondering where to bury the head, Jizo guided them to a place to bury the head while blowing a conch shell.
